What is an individual learning plan?

An individual learning plan is a documented framework created collaboratively by educators and families that sets tailored learning goals, strategies, and support adjustments for a child with additional needs in an early childhood setting.

An individual learning plan (sometimes called an individual support plan) is a personalized document that outlines how a childcare centre will support a child's learning, development, and wellbeing. It moves beyond one-size-fits-all practice by identifying the child's particular strengths, interests, and areas where they need extra help.

Educators and families work together to create the plan, drawing on observations of the child's progress and any professional assessments (such as those from speech pathologists or occupational therapists). The plan typically includes specific learning goals, the strategies staff will use to support those goals, any equipment or adjustments needed, and how progress will be tracked and reviewed.

The purpose of an individual learning plan is to make sure children with developmental delays, disabilities, or other additional needs receive timely, targeted support within the regular childcare environment. This helps level the playing field so all children can participate meaningfully in activities and routines. It also creates a shared understanding between staff and parents about what the child is working toward and how everyone at home and at the centre can support them consistently.

Review and adjustment happen regularly, typically every few months or when circumstances change. When looking for a centre that can meet your child's needs, check whether staff have experience creating and implementing individual plans. Many childcare centres in Redland Bay offer inclusion support and can discuss their approach during enrolment.
