What is the National Quality Standard (NQS)?
The National Quality Standard is Australia's regulatory framework that assesses early childhood services and schools against seven quality areas, with services receiving ratings of Exceeding, Meeting, Working Towards, or Unsatisfactory.
Australia's childcare and early education services operate under the National Quality Standard, a framework that measures how well a service delivers education and care to children. The standard is enforced through regular assessments by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), with results publicly available to help families make informed choices.
The NQS assesses services across seven quality areas:
- Educational program and practice
- Children's health and safety
- Physical environment and safety
- Staffing arrangements
- Relationships with children
- Collaborative partnerships with families and communities
- Leadership and service management
Each quality area is evaluated against specific standards. A service receives one of four ratings: Exceeding (consistently exceeds the standard), Meeting (complies with the standard), Working Towards (not yet meeting the standard), or Unsatisfactory (fails to meet the standard). A service must Meet or Exceed all seven areas to maintain approval to operate.
