Moving from family day care to a long day care centre

Families often start with family day care for the smaller, home-like group of a single educator caring for a handful of children, then look to move to a centre-based long day care service as their child grows or their own scheduling needs change. This transition is a distinct decision point from simply choosing one type of care from the start, and it involves different paperwork, settling-in routines, and educator-to-child ratios than either category page addresses on its own.

  • Centres group children by age room rather than mixed-age small groups, so expect a bigger adjustment period for social settling
  • Your CCS arrangement needs to be re-established with the new centre even if your subsidy percentage stays the same
  • Ask the new centre about transition or settling-in visits before your child's official start date
  • Request that your family day care educator share any routine notes (sleep, feeding, developmental observations) with the new centre for continuity

What it costs

Fee structures differ between family day care and centre-based long day care, and switching does not carry a special transition fee beyond the new centre's standard enrolment process. Your CCS subsidy percentage carries across but needs a new Complying Written Arrangement with the centre you're moving to.

FAQ

Will my child's CCS subsidy be interrupted when I switch providers?
Your subsidy percentage itself doesn't reset, but you do need a new Complying Written Arrangement in place with the new centre before subsidised fees apply there.
How long does a typical settling-in period take when moving to a centre?
This varies by child, but many centres offer a few short orientation visits before the official start date to ease the adjustment from a smaller family day care setting.
Can I keep using family day care part-time while starting at a centre?
Some families do run both part-time during a transition period, though you'd need to check both providers can accommodate a split schedule and how it affects your CCS hours.
